Are Consumers Myopic? Evidence from New and Used Car Purchases
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate whether car buyers are myopic about future fuel costs. We estimate the e↵ect of gasoline prices on short-run equilibrium prices of cars of di↵erent fuel economies. We then compare the implied changes in willingness-to-pay to the associated changes in expected future gasoline costs for cars of di↵erent fuel economies in order to calculate implicit discount rates. Using di↵erent assumptions about annual mileage, survival rates, and demand elasticities, we calculate a range of implicit discount rates similar to the range of interest rates paid by car buyers who borrow. We interpret this as showing little evidence of consumer myopia.

Factors Affecting the Willingness of Consumers to Pay for Electric Cars in the Country
Increasing environmental pollution from fuel vehicle and limited fossil fuel resources have increased tendency to produce electric vehicles. In Iran, the use of electric vehicles requires further study in the field of supply and demand for this product. Regardless of the supply issue, the use of electric vehicles requires a better understanding of the needs, wants and tastes of consumers. In th...

متن کاملA Dynamic Formulation for Car Ownership Modeling
Discrete choice models are commonly used in transportation planning and modeling, but their theoretical basis and their applications have been mainly developed in a static context. We propose to develop an estimation technique for analyzing the impact of technological change on the dynamics of consumer demand. The proposed research presents a dynamic model of consumer demand that explicitly acc...
متن کاملDemand Dynamics in the Seasonal Goods Industry: An Empirical Analysis
This study develops and estimates a dynamic model of consumer choice behavior in markets for seasonal goods where products are sold over a finite season and availability is limited. In these markets, retailers often use dynamic markdown policies in which an initial retail price is announced at the beginning of the season and the price is subsequently marked down as the season progresses. Strate...
متن کاملBehavioral Aspects of Price Setting and Their Policy Implications
In the textbook conception of economics, consumers use prices to determine the bundle of purchases that maximize their utility subject to the constraint that the total value of these purchases cannot exceed their income. In this paper, I consider the implications of letting consumers have somewhat different reactions to prices. First, I allow consumers to be unsophisticated when they use price ...
